The Diabetes Unit (DU) of KEM Hospitals, Pune, is Western India’s pioneering facility dedicated to diabetes research, care, management, diabuddy concept, social media interaction and patient adoption scheme. We are today 27 years old.

India is reputedly one of the world’s capitals of diabetes and coronary heart diseases. The Diabetes Unit of KEM Hospital(link to KEM Hospital website), Pune owes its origin to the pioneering ideas of Dr Chittaranjan Yajnik, who foresaw the epidemic of diabetes right from his student days at the BJ Medical College, Pune. Noticing a distinct difference in the characteristics of diabetic patients in India and the descriptions given in western text books, he felt it necessary to develop a deeper and more holistic understanding of Indians’ susceptibility to the disease. He felt only than it would be possible to plan appropriate interventions for treatment and prevention. That led to his realization that research had to be an integral part of a facility which offers treatment of the condition.

Prof. C. S. Yajnik
Director, Diabetes Unit

The idea of setting up a Diabetes Unit occurred to me when I was a student at the BJ Medical College and saw an increasing number of diabetic patients in the wards and the outpatients. Our patients showed obvious differences from the text book descriptions, and I thought we needed to study and document them properly. I was lucky to train in Oxford with Dr Hockaday and Dr Edwin Gale. The atmosphere and the training in Oxford was instrumental in shaping my career. On my return from the UK, I worked at the Sassoon Hospital as a Pool Officer of the CSIR, but soon realised the limitations of the place. My plans to transfer to the KEM Hospital materialized only when the then Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi intervened! Mrs Banoo Coyaji helped me set up a Diabetes Clinic and Dr V N Rao supported my research ambitions.

Dr. Mrs. Laila Garda
Director, Research

In 1973 Banoobai set up the KEM Hospital Research Centre, an NGO whose mission was to conduct problem oriented and problem solving research in subjects which affect the life of common people, with an emphasis on women and children. The areas of research include Reproductive and Child Health(RCH), adolescent health, HIV and AIDS, quality of health services, womens' development and various clinical topics. There is a multi-disciplinary approach which leads to providing quality services at the K.E.M. Hospital and informs policy makers regarding evidence-based intervention.
